Treating Vitiligo

Modern therapies for a more even skin tone

Vitiligo, also known as leukoderma, is a chronic, non-contagious pigmentation disorder in which the skin loses its natural pigment. The sharply defined, white patches can appear anywhere on the body and often affect mucous membranes or hair.

Vitiligo is medically harmless, but can significantly impair one's self-image. Modern dermatological treatments now allow for a marked improvement in pigmentation, stabilization of the condition, and often visible repigmentation.

1. What is vitiligo?

Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease in which the immune system attacks the pigment cells (melanocytes). This results in white, depigmented patches that can spread slowly or remain stable for years.

The disease usually progresses in flare-ups, often accompanied by periods without change.
